Computer Workers

Since you have arrived to this part of the site it is quite obvious that you use the computer a lot and have realized already that it matters how you do it.

The way we use computers and modern technology is affecting every aspect of our lives.  Finding a sustainable way to work is an ongoing global and cultural challenge.  FM Alexander maintained that modern change was happening faster than our possibility to change; our cleverness being too fast for our ability to adapt.  So, how can we welcome technology yet still take care of ourselves.

The way of sitting is mainly influenced by our furniture and what our point of focus is when sitting. During many daily hours, this position greatly influences our posture, along with our other daily hours and what we do with them.

Many computer users complain of headaches, stiff neck, backaches and most of them are aware of the origin of these symptoms. However, not many people are aware that other health complications such as problems with digestion, disturbed concentration, varicose veins, just to name a few are caused by a tendency to sit using poor positioning of self. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then I have good news for you!

Nowadays many more companies are organizing Alexander Technique lessons as they realize the overall benefits this brings to the health and performance of the companies employees.

You don’t have to live with those problems!

While we are talking about sitting in front of the computer, let's take a look at how to sit correctly.

Whatever we do, we are involved with physical forces. With correct alignment and posture, these forces help us to move, to rest, and to work with minimal stress and tension on the body. For example, if we turn our attention to the head, the head weighs approximately 6 - 8kgs and is supported by the spine which the lower part thereof is surrounded by the pelvis supported by the legs which are supported by the ground. Since the body doesn’t need any other support to stay composed, neither does it require any stress to stand or sit.

"Truth is – office work makes people fat and lazy" International Express Tuesday Jan 24, 2012. It goes on to say "New research claims: Sitting at a desk all day means you are more likely to slump on the sofa at home and do no exercise. The desk bound workers are more likely to turn into couch potatoes, increasing their risk of obesity. The trend is partly blamed on technology making it easier for lazy staff to email a colleague rather than walk over to see them"

So, this becomes a vicious cycle from out of which it is hard to change. Take a look at how you can sit, stand, and do all the normal everyday actions with less pull/push on your whole frame. You only have one vehicle for life.
